At the time it was announced that on 20 April 1890, one day after the new moon, between seven and half past eight in the evening, the conditions would be especially good for studying the crescent moon. On that day, the planets Venus and Mercury were visible together with the moon in a light arch in the sky. It is highly probable that Van Gogh has depicted this phenomenon, albeit slightly altered, in his nocturnal landscape.
