In Saint-Rémy Van Gogh practiced his brush technique. Many of his works from this period are made up of wavy lines, giving the paintings a stylised character. This is clearly evident in ‘Country Road in Provence by Night’. The work is made up of short, rhythmic, wavy brushstrokes that make the painting appear to move.Research has shown that the orange of the crescent moon was added later, once the under layer was already dry. Van Gogh probably added the ‘stronger’ orange because he thought the contrast between the blue sky and the yellow moon wasn’t strong enough.
