The French artist Henri Fantin-Latour paints numerous portraits, group portraits and self-portraits, but mainly achieves fame for his many still lifes of flowers depicted in soft colours and meticulous detailing. The background is often more crudely painted in order to accentuate the subject. Fantin-Latour also applied this principle in Eva’s portrait. Her face is painted in great detail, while her dress and the simple background are rendered in less precise brushstrokes. As a fine detail the pink rhododendron in the corner has the same structure as the decorations on her dress.
