THE FAMILY Sarah A warm welcome to the Powerscourt Gardens and our first audio stop ‘Statues.’ This is one of eight family ‘action quest’ stops for visitors with children. Each family stop sign is coloured yellow. The action quests offer stories and activities that can be enjoyed by adults and children together. These include: treasure hunts; ‘I-spy’ and hide and seek games, and quizzes. You can do all or just one quest and you can complete them in any order. At each stop we will outline the type of quest and the age group that it is best suited to. Anthony This action quest involves a simple I-Spy game among the statues on this terrace. It is suitable for children of all ages. MERVYN’S THEME PARK AlexHello, my name is Alex and I’m the Head Gardener here. My favourite character in the story of Powerscourt is Mervyn Wingfield, the 7th Lord Powerscourt. Anthony Hi, my name is Anthony and Mervyn was my great-great grandad. He wanted to make Powerscourt a kind of theme park with: giant trees; rare and exotic plants; fantastic fountains; and amazing sculptures of Gods, heroes and mythical creatures. Sarah Hello, I’m Sarah and I manage this beautiful place. Mervyn created this Garden of the Gods which you will enjoy exploring today. He placed some wonderful statues and giant urns on this terrace. CLASSICAL GODS Sarah Well then. We should show our guests the four big statues that Mervyn felt symbolized Powerscourt. Anthony A winged statue of Victory is right here in front of the garden entry point. VICTORY Alex Do you know what the plants are called that Victory is holding in her hands? Sarah Take a closer look at the two plants and discuss this together. When you think you know, press the PLAY button to continue our quest
