GREEK MONSTERS Anthony Here we are at the winged horses. There are a lot of scary and revolting monsters associated with Pegasus. This flying horse sprang from the blood of the Gorgon Medusa, when she was beheaded by the hero Perseus. Alex What is a gorgon? And who was Medusa? Sarah Medusa was a beautiful golden-haired maiden. But she was not allowed to have boyfriends, because she was a priestess of the goddess Athena. However she fell in love with Poseidon and married him. Anthony Athena punished Medusa by turning her into a green-faced monster called a Gorgon. Every lock of her hair became a poisonous snake. One look from her once gentle eyes would turn anyone into stone. Alex The poor girl!AnthonyPegasus helped another Greek hero kill an even nastier monster called the Chimera. The Chimera was a fire-breathing female monster with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a snake's tail. Alex So are these winged horses here to keep away gorgons and Chimeras?Sarah We have quite enough statues here already without Medusa turning all our visitors into stone. Alex But it would be quite handy to have some fire breathing Chimeras. I could train them to sweep up fallen leaves with their long tails. Then they could burn them up with their fiery breath. Sarah That would be great, but with goat’s bodies, the Chimeras would probably want to eat all the flowers. WINGFIELD FAMILY SYMBOL Anthony My family, the Wingfields, lived here for three hundred years, and created all these gardens. The flying horses are a symbol of my family name. Alex So why flying horses, Anthony? Anthony Okay, two clues. What does a horse need to fly and where do you keep horses Sarah Think about this and press PLAY again when you think you know the answer.
