Sylvain Le Guen’s fascination with fans can be traced back to childhood. At the age of 10 he made his first fan from inexpensive materials, and so began a lifelong exploration of fans and fan making. A consummate perfectionist, he combines imaginative forms, futuristic materials and heritage craft techniques to create fans of extraordinary beauty. Le Guen is deeply inspired by the Japanese paper art of origami, incorporating into his trademark ‘Pop-Up’ fans origami flower motifs which unfurl as the fan is opened: art imitating nature itself. With clients ranging from film producers and museums to private collectors, Le Guen has brought a contemporary vision to a time-honoured object in a way that only somebody with outstanding artistic flair could, making his fans both haute couture accessories and unique collectible items.
