Linoleum was popular among the Nieuwe Bouwen architects. It was hygienic, easy to clean, and could be laid flat without any bumps or wrinkles. It was also quite expensive in the early 1930s; it was used in hospitals but not in private homes, and it was therefore a great luxury to have it in the guest bedroom, the serving room and the servants' quarters. The couple originally intended to have dark brown linoleum in their bedroom, but they eventually decided to use carpet because it was warmer and more comfortable. The linoleum was ordered from Metz and Co in Amsterdam, and made in Krommenie, to the northwest of Amsterdam.
