In Seurat’s time the Gravelines harbour basin is the home base for the herring and cod fishing fleet. And yet there is no activity whatsoever on the painting. The sailboat entering the harbour does not even have a skipper. This clompete desolation adds a mysterious feeling to this harbour view. Seurat reduced the visible reality to its essence and created a timeless, tranquil atmosphere.
