In this painting by Arie Kater, a female nude model is standing in the painter's studio. The artist is sitting in the foreground. From his chair, he observes the model. In the background, a mirror is visible and, in it, you can see the reflection of the artist. In this way the model is flanked on two sides by the watching eye of the artist. The painting shows the process of looking and being looked at in a unique way. Arie Kater painted and drew people and their relationships, often those on the edge of society, but also nudes and couples making love. He depicted them as he saw them, and from memory. Without making them more attractive, he brought them into view with brutal honesty. From a randomly placed smudge, he began to tell his story, about the psychological state of his characters, their motives, madness and oddities. He makes the invisible visible and noticeable. His work method enhances this; he paints with loose brushstrokes and a subdued colour palette. His compositions are clear and strong, and, by using an empty background, he achieves a great feeling of spaciousness.
