In this lithograph by Jan Mensinga, you can see the talent of a master craftsman. With admirable ease, he makes a constant flow of high quality etchings, lithographs, linos and woodcuttings. In these he combines a rich fantasy world with considerable craftsmanship. Jan Mensinga was not afraid to experiment and often combined various methods in a print. Mensinga brought his imaginative characters to life with the same passion. People are central in his work. It was, essentially, prominent pub regulars, foolish kings, ventriloquists and other eccentrics who populate his terrifying but fascinating worlds. He imagines fairy tales, proverbs and sayings light heartedly and humorously. He also illustrated several books by among others, Tsjechov, Rilke and Baudelaire, where his preference for bleak surrealism can be seen. The etching of a self-portrait, which is also on this wall, is also by Jan Mensinga.
